  • Overview

    The purpose of the Manufacturing Engineer is to support the Manufacturing function in a continuous effort to reduce production costs and improve product quality. This involves identifying opportunities for process and/or product improvement and then developing, testing and implementing such changes to achieve the optimal economic return on the capital, material and manpower resources employed.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Functions of the Job

    1. Actively seek out and identify opportunities for process improvement and cost reduction in all manufacturing-related activities, focused on integration of Best Practices to produce measurable improvements in labor productivity, material costs, lead times and product quality, in an intensive effort to continuously reduce overall manufacturing costs.
    2. Evaluate manufacturing processes by conducting research; applying knowledge of product design, fabrication & assembly methods, current materials & tooling; conferring with Engineering, Design and Manufacturing technicians, as well as material and equipment vendors.
    3. Develop improved manufacturing processes by studying product requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and related equipment to achieve increased productivity and/or reduced material costs.
    4. Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning work flow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
    5. Provide decision-making information by conducting detailed analyses of manufacturing costs in order to identify & quantify compliance with or variances from original estimates or project budgets, as well as reviewing potential impact on production schedules.
    6. Assist with development and presentation of employee training as needed to support communication and understanding of new or modified manufacturing processes or related changes in manufacturing methods.
    7. Assure product and process quality by designing testing methods; testing finished- product and process capabilities; establishing standards; confirming manufacturing processes.
    8. Assist in keeping production equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; ensuring that operators are following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures and requesting special service when needed.
    9. Assist in conducting supplier qualification audits to assess technical capability, productive capacity, reliability of quoted lead times, competitive pricing and acceptability of commercial Terms & Conditions.
    10. Participation in various internal committees, review teams, or similar work groups  
    11. engaged in either operational or administrative process creation, review or
    12. improvement efforts. This includes areas such as Plant Safety, ABBI Support (ERP
    13. System), Process Review Board, CAPA Program, and others.
    14. Continued education/training via formal coursework, certification, professional
        1. seminar participation, etc. to ensure awareness of and adherence to best practices
        2. for all relevant manufacturing-related activities.
    15. Adhere to all company policies (Safety, Human Resources, IT, or other).
    16. Perform any other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned on an as needed basis.

    Qualifications

    Educational Requirements

    Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a similar technical discipline.

    Consideration will be given to individuals who may not have the specified depth of educational background, but have extensive operational experience deemed to satisfy the overall requirements of the position.

     

     

    Minimum Experience, Abilities Required and Special Requirements

    Minimum of (3) years prior experience in a Engineering role, preferably involving custom-engineered technical products. SME Certification as a Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE) or a Certified Manufacturing Technologist (CMfgT) is highly desirable.

     

    Knowledge and application of LEAN Manufacturing principles to minimize manufacturing cycle time and waste, facilitate efficient layout of manufacturing equipment, work flow and processes. Certification in Lean Manufacturing/Six Sigma is highly desirable.

     

    Ideal candidate would have a background in biotech or chemical industry, or experience with custom-designed process equipment of a similar scale and complexity.
